I have recently discovered the excellent Visual Dare writing prompt, which provides writers with an image and a theme to inspire stories of 150 words or less. This week’s entry is ‘Contemplating’, and here is my entry.
The empty theatre seemed so much bigger when the seats were unoccupied.
Maggie, sat alone in silence, glanced at her watch. He was supposed to be here now. She clutched her handbag tightly, knowing that it contained the barest of essentials needed to begin a new life, away from everything. She had been so ready, so willing to go with him. But now that the time had come, it was starting to seem like a mistake.
She checked her watch again. He was late now. Maybe he wasn’t coming after all. Maybe, just maybe, she could just go back home. Empty her handbag. Return to the monotony of her life.
She grabbed the handles of her bag and started to rise from her seat, when there was a sudden bang from behind. She whirled around, and saw him standing in the doorway. Ready to take her away from it all.

Thank you very much, highly appreciated! There was a strict-limit of 150 words or less…It was originally 180 words long, and even cutting out 30 was a painful experience. Painful, but fun, and highly addictive!
I know just what you mean! I entered a contest a while back and I had the same struggle. It was difficult taking apart my story but thats the fun part. Keep writing!
You too! I think flash-fiction and drabbles are the prose equivalent of poetry. Every single word has to count, or the flow is broken.
The next Visual Dare is going to be uploaded tomorrow…I’m excited!
I wasn’t sure where this one was going, I suspected a murder….theatres and cinemas are eerie, especially when that one bloke in the rain mac sits alone at the front to watch a horror film.
Couldn’t agree more. It will be interesting to revisit and extend this at some point, develop the ideas further…

O my goodness. This story could launch in so many different directions. Even better is the fact that you communicated her mindset so well, but without letting us know if she has a dark secret, or he does, or both, or neither. Thank you so much! I had a blast. Beneath is already written, but can’t get online on my laptop until tomorrow. That story has already helped me with another piece I have been working on! I’m not typing it up on my phone though, that would be soul destroying 😀 I’m so happy to be a part of this! 😀 😀
